You might have heard about the brilliant move by Equality Utah, asking the Mormon church to stand by the statements they made during the campaign about not objecting to civil unions and such. They asked the Mormons for their support on 5 bills to be put forward in the Utah legislature. The New York Times, among many others, wrote about it a few days ago.
BUT THIS JUST IN: After days of “no comment”, it looks like the Washington Post got a tidbit from a Mormon church spokesperson at the end of this article.
Otterson said the church’s statement was based on civil unions in California and that no decision has been made regarding similar rights in Utah. ”I don’t want to give the impression that the church is saying civil unions in all cases are okay,” Otterson said.
I don’t think any of us expected them to support it, but WAY TO GO Equality Utah for calling their bluff! This is going to come as a surprise to *some* Mormons, including my mother, who were really believing all the crap the church was saying during the campaign.
