Proposition 8 Blacklist/Boycott List

Posted on 16 November 2008 by admin

I’m getting a lot of traffic from Google from people looking for the blacklist/boycott list for prop 8, so I thought I’d do a post to summarize some of the available resources, both on this site and a number of others. If you’re wondering what you can do on top of boycotting, Stop8.org is a good place to find out.

But first, there are a few companies that I’ve personally decided to avoid: Marriott (including Renaissance Hotels, Courtyard by Marriott, Fairfield Inn, TownePlace Suites, SpringHill Suites, and Ritz-Carlton Hotels) and Cinemark Theaters (including Century Theaters, CineArts, and Tinseltown Theaters).

For more information on supporters of Prop 8, please visit these resources:

  • THIS SITE: You can always check the link section on my homepage to see some of the best resources and links to boycott info & the prop 8 blacklist.  Click on the tags for blacklist or boycott for discussion of some of the high profile cases.
  • CALIFORNIANS AGAINST HATE: Has a nicely organized list with more background info on a lot of the donors.
  • CONTRIBUTION SEARCH: The San Francisco Chronicle has a database where you can look up donations both for and against Prop 8.  You can search by name, just city and state, and for/against Prop 8.
  • YELP: Many people are posting information on Yelp about businesses that donated.  It’s interesting to browse some of the entries to see what people say, and in a lot of them, the people making the donations have responded (some making apologies and making in-kind donations to help repeal the prop).  This Google query link will show you a lot of these pages.
  • The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has posted a list.
  • MormonsFor8.com has probably the most comprehensive information on Mormon donors.  Their FAQ says, “This is an information website.  We suppose that whether it is “Pro-8” or “Anti-8” or neutral toward Proposition 8 depends on how the information is used. …. Just as the people  who support Prop 8  say they are “not anti-gay, just pro-marriage”, this site is “not anti-Mormon, just pro-information.”
  • Other sites include BoycottMormonBusiness.com and AntiGayBlacklist.com.
  • A lot of the most publicised calls for boycotts came from AmericasBlog.com.

If you know of more sites and resources, or just want to talk about this, please join in the discussion with your comments.

Targeting Mormons Unfair?

Equality California estimates that Mormons donated as much as $20 million to Prop. 8, while the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal group, gave $1.25 million to the effort and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, $200,000.
