Michael Russnow wrote an article for The Huffington Post, discussing complaints about the backlash from Prop 8. I like the points he makes, but I’d go a step further and say that it is NOT discrimination, in the unfair sense that Prop 8 supporters try to claim, for people to protest and speak out against those who passed Prop 8.
It’s dangerous for us to try to frame our opposition as “fair” discrimination because that would be an oxymoron. Discrimination is the unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice. Prejudice is a suspicion, intolerance or irrational hatred, or making a decision before becoming aware of the relevant facts. These concepts do not describe our situation.
Otherwise, I think the article is quite good for those wondering why we’re making noise or if it’s the right thing to do. Here’s a quote:
Freedom of speech has nothing to do with this issue, as no one I’ve heard or read has called for rounding the bastards up and putting them in concentration camps, or doing them physical harm or taking away their civil rights. Most of the outrage I’ve witnessed deals with not wanting to associate on a professional level with people who promote a political objective to interfere with a person’s right to have the same joy in their lives that the majority of Americans have.
