Why are you going after the Mormons?
First, we are not “going after” them. We want to make people aware of exactly what happened with Proposition 8 in California. Mormons are a huge part of the story, and many people are unaware of this. Mormons should not be upset that their actions are being highlighted unless they are for some reason ashamed.
The reason Mormons are a big part of the story is because anywhere from 50% to 77% of the money backing Prop 8 came from Mormons. In addition, people affiliated with the Prop 8 campaign have publicly stated that Mormons were a massive force on the ground, with an estimated 80% to 90% of volunteers coming from the Mormon (LDS/Latter-Day Saints) church.
Someone told me that the gays are hypocrites since they are being intolerant of Mormons.
We are intolerant of discrimination and efforts to promote discrimination. To say that we should be tolerant of their actions is like saying that we should tolerate unfair discrimination.
Were there a lot of other people behind Proposition 8, and not just Mormons?
There was no other group funding and actively promoting Prop 8 on the scale of the Mormons. Mormons were THE major force behind Prop 8.
It’s not right to go after certain people or a church for expressing their first amendment rights.
Everyone has a right to their opinions. It’s immoral to impose your religion and opinions on others by passing a law that discriminates against a minority group. This creates government sanctioned and essentially mandated discrimination against a group of people.
