The Mormons New Friends

Posted on 18 November 2008 by admin

I’ve been reading up on some of the Mormons new friends (Focus on the Family, Family Research Council, etc) and I think that my head is going to explode.  Not only have their Prop 8 friends been on the attack with Marriott, trying to get them to remove porn from their hotel rooms, they did a swift boat on Mitt Romney early in the campaign since Romney was on the Marriott’s board from 1992 to 2001.  They later warmed up to Mitt though still tried to get out the word, through a questionable Romney quote, that Mormons are not Christians. (Hey Mormons, it’s just a word! Can’t you find something else to call yourselves?)

Who to Boycott and Why

Posted on 17 November 2008 by admin

I’m starting to embrace the boycott, or at least feel that it’s inevitable to avoid certain companies or businesses. Here’s why.

First, people associated with these businesses, or the businesses themselves, have made a public statement by their support of Prop 8.  This is not our problem: it falls directly on the companies themselves.  A lot of effort is being made by some to try to discern the circumstances around the donation.  From my perspective, this is simply a PR disaster for the companies and it’s up to them to do damage control.  That being said, if it’s clear that a donation was made by a low level employee, I don’t think it’s fair to target them.

Interesting Visitor to the Site

Posted on 14 November 2008 by admin

I was just looking over my server logs and noticed a visit by Brandwatch.net to the article I posted about Marriott.  Huh.  Very interesting.  I wonder if it’s a new service put in place by Marriott for the fallout from Prop 8 or if it’s a service they’ve been using for a long time. A lot of companies do use clipping services.

In any case, I’m sure that Marriott (or whatever company sent this bot) is going to get quite a report from the last few days!  I’d hate to be the one on the receiving end having to figure out what to do about it.

Bill Marriott Tries to Distance Hotels from H8

Posted on 14 November 2008 by admin

If you ask me, I don’t want to sleep in a hotel that has a Book of Mormon in the nightstand.  They’ve also banned smoking at all their locations.  But I digress. Read on for excerpts from the Salt Lake Tribune and the response from AmericasBlog.  Marriott brands include Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Marriott Hotels, Renaissance, Courtyard, Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites, Fairfield Inns, and TownePlace Suites.

Targeting Mormons Unfair?

Equality California estimates that Mormons donated as much as $20 million to Prop. 8, while the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal group, gave $1.25 million to the effort and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, $200,000.
