Complaint Filed with CA Fair Political Practices Commission

Posted on 13 November 2008 by admin

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that a formal complaint has been filed against the Mormon church with the California Fair Political Practices Commission.  It alleges that the church underreported involvement in the Prop 8 initiative.

The advocacy organization’s founder, Fred Karger, wrote in a letter – to FPPC and Attorneys General Edmund G. Brown Jr., of California, and Utah’s Mark Shurtleff – that the church “has been highly secretive about its massive involvement in the campaign, but we managed to piece together evidence of some of their more visible activities done directly to communicate with California voters.”

Wall Street Journal Talks About Church Soliciting

Posted on 13 November 2008 by admin

This Wall Street Journal article includes a number of descriptions of the heavy church pressure and involvement in prop 8.

Some Mormons who declined to donate said their local church leaders had made highly charged appeals, such as saying that their souls would be in jeopardy if they didn’t give. Church spokesmen said any such incident wouldn’t reflect Mormon Church policy.

As a former Mormon, and if you read about this in other places you’ll find info to back me up, I can say that when the church asks, you really can’t say no.

El Coyote Ugly: LDS Owner Talks to Gay Patrons

Posted on 13 November 2008 by admin

My friend Sam posted video of the LDS owner of El Coyote, a restaurant with heavy gay and liberal minded patronage, responding to her donation to the Yes on 8 campaign, trying to avert a boycott.  When Sam asks her, “would you be willing to make a personal donation to repeal the amendment?”  The truth then comes out as to where she firmly stands.

“Wonderful Testimony of Obedience”

Posted on 13 November 2008 by admin

A Mormon account of solicitations for Prop 8 donations by the church, perhaps using tithing records to determine how much money they should ask them for.

What we were dreading, though, was to be asked to make “get out the vote” calls or put up a sign on our lawn (the worst part about being asked by the Church to do something is you really can’t say no– and if you do, you just don’t get it).

Targeting Mormons Unfair?

Equality California estimates that Mormons donated as much as $20 million to Prop. 8, while the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal group, gave $1.25 million to the effort and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, $200,000.
